EMSculpt Neo

BTL, the company that makes EMSculpt Neo has well established expertise in the physical therapy and muscle stimulation market.  They entered the cosmetic world with EMSculpt.  EMSculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) to stimulate muscle contractions and build muscle.  This might remind you of a TENS unit used in physical therapy, but HIFEM+ technology contracts muscles much, MUCH, MUCH more strongly, and stimulates muscles at supermaximal rates – far beyond anything you can do in a workout.  During a workout you can usually get 30% of a muscle’s fibers to contract.  EMSculpt recruits nearly 100% of the muscle and each 30 minute session causes 24,000 contractions.  

EMSculpt has dominated the muscle building device space with this platform.

EMSculpt Neo adds radiofrequency energy (RF energy) to heat both fat and muscle.  Heating up muscle helps it perform better by improving blood flow, so you get more muscle building from HIFEM.  Heating up fat burns it away by making it die. 

RF and HIFEM together will usually increase muscle mass by up to 25% and decrease fat by up to 30% in the treated area.

Why is EMSculpt NEO better than XYZ?

What most excites me about EMSculpt Neo compared to other successful body shaping procedures is the muscle building component.  Liposuction or Coolsculpt can reduce abdominal fat and improve appearance, but I really like EMSculpt NEO because it can give you a better belly – stronger and tighter.

The suspicion (studies are underway) is that by increasing core strength, EMSculpt NEO may improve your workout performance, enhance posture, and reduce lower back pain.  None of these have been proven yet in studies, but many are observing these benefits.

EMSculpt NEO vs Liposuction

Liposuction is the absolute gold standard for fat removal.  It works REALLY well for that.  However, it is invasive and has real downtime.  After abdominal liposuction, you aren’t going to be doing crunches for months while you heal.  During this time, you are effectively losing muscle.

Not only is EMSculpt NEO completely non-invasive, but it also does something liposuction cannot – it builds muscle.

EMSculpt NEO vs Coolsculpt

The coolsculpt story is pretty fantastic.  A dermatologist notices that kids are getting fat atrophy in their cheeks from sucking on popsicles (I suspect a LOT of popsicles), prompting the exploration of fat freezing.

Coolsculpt, I think, was the first successful non-invasive fat reducing technology that wasn’t seriously painful.

Like Coolsculpt, EMSculpt is completely non-invasive, but it also does something Coolsculpting cannot – it builds muscle.

Results from EMSculpt NEO will be long-lasting, typically 6 to 12 months. However, this depends entirely on your lifestyle and eating habits.  Just like working out, EMSculpt can help you get into shape, but staying in shape is also an active process.  Realistically, some patients choose to receive 1 to 2 maintenance treatments per year in addition to their normal health routine to stay toned.

EMSculpt NEO is FDA-cleared to build muscle and treat fat in 4 major areas of the body: the abdomen, buttocks, arms and legs. With the new EDGE applicators, we can also treat the flanks and build core strength!

• Abdomen and flanks (love handles):  Our large adapters target the rectus abdominis.  This is the muscle that you need to shred to get a 6 pack.  Treatment of the abs can also improve diastasis recti, which is the separation of the muscle that affects many women after pregnancy.  Our edge adapters sit over the flanks and use RF to reduce muffin top and love handles while HIFEM strengthens the obliques.
• Glutes:  Using the large adapters we can work out the glutes.  We may not need much RF here because some fat here helps with curviness.  Using HIFEM to work the glutes (like squats or deadlifts) will lift and tighten the bootie.
• Legs:  We can do all kinds of things to the legs.  We can use the large adapters to treat the quads and hamstrings, making them stronger and toned.  We can use our small adapters to treat the inner and outer thighs, primarily for fat reduction.  The small adapters can also be used on the calves.
• Arms.  The small adapters can be used on the biceps and triceps, just in case you want to look completely ripped.

EMSCULPT NEO® provides excellent results for men and women of a wide range of body types and ages – treatment is ideal for patients with a BMI of up to 35. 

Some of the absolute best EMSculpt NEO scenarios are:

• Someone who eats healthy, gets some regular exercise, has a stable weight, but is unhappy with their belly, legs, or glutes
• Someone about to start a workout routine and wants to jumpstart it with a major boost to their core
• Someone working out regularly, but just cannot get the definition or tone that they are looking for

There is nothing magical about a BMI of 35, but when we get to higher BMIs, the HIFEM field has a much harder time stimulating the muscle because the overlying fat acts like an insulator.  You will still get fat reduction from the RF, but there are likely better options to first help you lower your BMI.  I’d rather see you focus your time, energy, and money there first.  

Patients should not receive EMSCULPT NEO® if they have a fever, malignant tumor, hemorrhagic conditions, recent surgical procedures, pulmonary insufficiency, pregnancy, sensitivity or allergy to latex. EMSCULPT NEO® should not be performed where it could interact with metal or electronic implants, including cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, intrathecal pumps, implanted defibrillators, implanted neurostimulators, drug pumps or hearing aids. We also do not recommend EMSCULPT NEO® be performed during a menstrual period.

Most patients will begin to see results in the 2 weeks following your first treatment, with the best improvements after about 2 months.* Results from EMSCULPT NEO® build over each treatment session, especially when supplemented by a healthy lifestyle.

I’d describe it as a good hurt.  EMSculpt NEO patients experience rapid muscle contractions, which I find to be more painful than anything I ever experienced doing crunches with a tough personal trainer.  But, it is very tolerable and I end up wanting more.  This is very different than the other body shaping technologies which are just plain painful.  

Afterwards, the treated areas feel like you had a workout.

Like EMSCULPT®️, there are typically no side effects from EMSCULPT NEO®. Some patients may experience temporary muscle soreness after treatment or redness in the treatment area lasting up to 1 hour. These side effects are transient and should completely resolve with time.

Serious adverse events have not be recorded for EMSCULPT NEO®, and rare risks are associated with severe preexisting conditions and metal or electrical implants.

Your weight and hydration status are checked.

Then, we get to work.

Depending on the body area being treated, you will lie on your back or stomach, or be sitting.  We strap the EMSCULPT NEO®️ to the area to be treated.  Then, we turn on the RF heating and start dialing up the HIFEM while you listen to music or watch TV.

Your treatment session will only take about 30 minutes, and when you’re finished, you’ll be able to get right back to your day!
