Sciton BBL-Hero vs IPL?
Sciton’s BBL-HERO is a type of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), however there are several key difference. If you’re not a laser tech geek, the easiest way to think of it is that IPL is like a Honda Civic which is a perfectly fine means of transportation, but BBL-HERO is like a Formula 1 car which is a painstakingly developed technologic marvel that harnesses every technologic advancement possible.
At any given time there are 15-20 different IPL devices on the market. IPL is technology has been around for 20 years. What sets Sciton apart are a variety of under the hood features that allow us to get dramatically better performance from the device AND have fewer problems.
- All IPL devices use visible light. However, the typical IPL device uses ONLY visible light. Sciton BBL-HERO uses these same wavelenghths of light, but also extends significantly into the near infrared spectrum. The near infrared spectrum is used mostly by non-ablative resurfacing lasers to rejuvenate the skin. With BBL-HERO you get some of the same effect of treatment like non-ablative Fraxel, but at no additional charge!
- It is common to get burns from IPL. One of the main reasons is that there is often significant variation in the fluence from one pulse to another. Much of this is because the power output varies greatly with temperature and these devices run HOT. If I’m pushing the machine hard, it will generate in excess of 45,000 BTU/hour. Sciton solved the heat problem by using two different flashlamp sources so that the lamp gets a chance to rest or cool between pulses. They combined this with a monster sized water cooling system to dissipate heat.
- Another reason people get burns from IPL is from overheating of the skin. Sciton incorporates an actively cooled sapphire crystal handpiece. We usually have it set to 15-25 degrees C. This cooling greatly protects the skin from thermal burns.
- BBL-HERO is Sciton’s latest advance. The best IPL devices can typically fire 1 pulse per second. BBL-Hero can do 4. This ability to deliver pulses far more quickly has allowed a tremendous transformation in how treatments are done. Instead of “stamping”, which often leads to tiger stripes or other problems of uneven treatment, we can glide over the skin in one smooth motion firing pulses continuously with BBL-HERO. We typically lower the energy, but deliver it in a much shorter pulse, which ends up being safer. This, combined with the smooth motion delivery makes it MUCH easier to get uniform results.
